A few years ago, when I lived in Oklahoma, I had a house and yard instead of a condo. My lawn was often tended by these two machines, loaned to me by my sweetie, that were lovingly taken care of and worked like a dream. Though their shed was a little crowded and it was a funny little dance of logistics to get them in and out of the shed, I enjoyed mowing the lawn very much, particularly when passers-by looked at these anachronistic beauties in action, and smiled.
I am of two minds about the effects of lawns on our environment. I would probably be making the grassy space smaller, increasing the areas for productive veg and fruit gardening bigger, and making more room for trees out front to shade the street and house, if I were still living in that town and that house. Still, there was a joy to making the small expanse of green lawn tidy and using two old machines that might otherwise have been left to rust back into the ground.
